In the late 1960s, it became apparent to Lockheed that a gap existed in the market between the high capacity, intercontinental Boeing 747, and the older 707s and DC-8s. Medium range aircraft like the 737, 727 and DC-9 were too small to economically service larger longer domestic US routes, and the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar was developed to fill the gap.

A dual aisle would afford greater passenger comfort, and the ability to carry 250 to 300 passengers coast-to-coast in much greater comfort and with better economics than 707s and DC-8s opened the market for Lockeed’s new tri-jet, which would also face competition from the similarly designed Douglas DC-10.

Lockheed commenced development on the TriStar in the mid-1960s, which was carried out in conjunction with the Rolls-Royce RB2111 high-bypass engine, which would power the new aircraft. From their fabrication facility at Palmade, the project brought great economic benefit to the State of California, which was celebrated in an roll-out ceremony hosted by then Governor of California, Ronald Reagan.

This 93 minute DVD features promotional films from the latter 1960s and early 1970s which tell the in-depth story of the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, from initial concept, to design, engine test, passenger handling, roll-out, first flight, and the extensive flight test program. As to be expected with films from this era, the film quality is unfortunately not up to current day standards. However, the story of the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar is one that has rarely been told in film media elsewhere, and we are pleased to present this interesting story for the viewing enjoyment of airline fans like you on this special release DVD.
