Today, cast aluminum metal airliner models produced by master model makers back in the 1950s and 1960s, are highly valuable collectibles. Such models now command premium prices from travel agent display model collectors the world over.
Before fiberglass and plastic became widely available in the 1960s, travel agent display models were sand cast by hand on a one-by-one basis. Highly skilled model makers in Germany, Holland and Britain were trained in the art of sand casting and foundry in the years following World War II. Metal aircraft model makers like Peter Nelson of the UK, Raise Up, Matthys Verkuyl of Holland, and Schaarschmidt of Berlin were masters of their trade; a trade which is now almost extinct having been replaced by modern technology.
In this 75 minute instructional DVD we join veteran sand casting master Werner Strekies for an in-depth lesson on how to prepare a sand casting mold for metal pouring, with special emphasis on casting the wings and fuselage sections of an airliner model. Werner studied foundry and sand casting in his native Germany for five years before emigrating to Canada in the mid-1950s. Today, Werner is one of the last great masters of his trade, and this DVD preserves his great knowledge for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
Werner explains in great detail how to build the molds, the type of casting sand to use, what tools to use, how to position the pattern pieces in the sand, how to shape the sand around the pattern for optimal pours and minimized prep work on the finished model, how to prepare the sand casting molds to accept the liquid aluminum, and what type of molten aluminum is best
for casting aircraft models.
